ZTreeWin - Fast and Flexible Text-mode File Manager
Review by on
There are two ways to go about things when you want to manage the file stored on your Microsoft developed Windows operating system. The first method is to use the tools provided by default by Microsoft. I am of course talking about Windows Explorer, the tool that lets you browse through all the data you’ve amounted over time on your drives (hard drive, USB drive, and so on).

Computer users that want basic functionality out of their file manager usually go for this method. They do not have to download anything and they do not have to install anything. For not going though the trouble of getting something other than Windows Explorer, they get a file manager that cannot do all that much.

There is a second way to manage your files: you can use 3rd party software that does everything Windows Explorer can do and then some. There are a myriad of such software applications out there – and out of them all, I would like to focus on ZTreeWin.

These 3rd party applications do have to be downloaded and installed on your Windows powered PC. The download and installation process is not something to put you off. In the case of ZTreeWin, the software weighs in at little over 1MB – even on the slowest of internet connections, the download process will complete in no time at all.

What does ZTreeWin do? This piece of software is the successor of the well0known DOS file-manager XTreeGold. This is to say it is a text-mode file/directory manager that will work without a problem on Windows XP as well as Windows Vista. ZTreeWin takes all the good parts its predecessor had to offer (properly good text-mode, tree-structured file-manager) while shedding its limitation (no long filename support, limited memory support).

Pros
  • Based on XTreeGold

Cons
  • Not exactly the prettiest thing in the world
  • Free to use only during the trial period
